What is All Apple Hardware Test (AHT) & Apple Service Diagnostic (ASD) disks?

Apple Service Diagnostic (ASD) is Apple's bootable hardware testing console that lets you run extensive technical test routines on your Mac.  Alternatively, Apple Hardware Test (AHT) is a simpler version of ASD that is already on most Mac OS X restore DVD's that shipped with your Mac.

ASD can run in Open Firmware mode "ASD (OF)", a bare minimum interface without any OS or in Operating System mode "ASD (OS)", a complete Mac OS X environment, allowing you to execute additional test routines, such as GPU and CPU vector acceleration (Altivec) related ones.

You can clone ASD and AHT to USB sticks and boot them as an alternative to using a CD-ROM.

Please note that both ASD and AHT need very precise Macintosh hardware to run.  Make sure to download the ASD or AHT that corresponds to your Macintosh model or it won't work.

Compatibility notes

Refer to the above list for very specific Macintosh model to AHT disk compatibility.

Files ending with .001.dmg (not .dmg.001)

Files that do not exactly end with .001, .002, etc... such as ASD_3S152.001.dmg (it ends with .001.dmg) are NOT file parts and should not be joined together using commands such as "copy /B" under Windows or "cat" under Linux.  Those are split Disk Utility disk images.  You have to do this under OSX: put all files in the same folder (e.g. on your desktop) and double click the .001.dmg file.  Disk Utility will "assemble" the whole partition and mount it.  If you want it on an USB stick or a DVD-R, you can then do that using Disk Utility or any of your favorite DVD burner apps.

 

Combine Legacy Split DMG files on modern versions of macOS.

Running on macOS Monterey or higher, it seems that the GUI no longer knows how to deal with these ancient split images.

I eventually found a solution with the trusty ol’ hdiutil command. Note: Confirmed working wirh macOS Sonoma 14.3.1.

Running it on the first disk image lead to hdiutil automatically joining them all together and spitting out a new disk image that I could successfully mount and extract the data from.

hdiutil convert Disk_Image.001.dmg -format UDRO -o DiskImage.dmg   

This gave me a file called DiskImage.dmg that I could then double-click on in the Finder and it mounted as expected.
