VSC emulates the Roland SC-88Pro, SC-88 and SC-55.  It's a standalone General MIDI synth with a built-in MIDI file player.  It can also be used in lieu of the Quicktime MIDI player for any other application that outputs MIDI via OMS.  It's fully programmable and playable from sequencers, just like the hardware.  It can also be used to convert MIDI files to audio, provided they use the General MIDI (or Roland's own GS) sound set - otherwise incorrect MIDI instrument assignments mean you'll get garbled nonsense.
