「パズルゲーム ドレミおとし」(Puzzle Game Do-Re-Mi Otoshi) is a Columns-like falling blocks puzzle game developed by SME Intermedia and published by Sony Music Entertainment under its super-budget Shock Price 500 Game Series label. Predictably, it was only ever released in Japan.
Much like in Columns, its gameplay consists of matching three identical blocks in a straight line as much as you can. There are seven different blocks, one for each music note, named after the fixed Do solfège as it is usual in Japan. Differently from Columns, however, the blocks fall in pairs, and the player can rotate the falling group 90° at a time. The groups aren’t glued together, meaning that no blank spaces can ever be formed by dropping blocks horizontally over a ledge. Every time a line is made, the corresponding note is played and it is stored on a 16-block buffer off-board. When the buffer is filled, the cleared notes are played again in sequence, the board is cleared and the game advances to the next level, dropping blocks faster. In the help files, the player is encouraged to up the challenge by trying to make the game play a small tune, clearing lines of blocks in a deliberate order. There isn’t much more to the game than that, but there’s only so much one can expect from a ¥500 game. It was developed using Macromedia Shockwave Director, which probably made viable its release for both Windows and Mac OS on the same CD-ROM.
